Heavy Fuel Oil

HFO is a by-product of crude oil distillation, and its quality depends on the crude oil used.

Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) Applications

Heavy fuel oil (HFO) refers to high-viscosity, high-density fuels used for generating motion or heat. Defined by the MARPOL Marine Convention of 1973, HFO has a density greater than 900 kg/m³ at 15°C or a kinematic viscosity exceeding 180 mm²/s at 50°C. It is primarily used as marine fuel and is the most common choice for medium and low-speed marine diesel engines.

HFO is a by-product of crude oil distillation, and its quality depends on the crude oil used. To meet different specifications, it is often blended with lighter fuels, resulting in intermediate fuel oils (IFO) like IFO 180 and IFO 380. The blends are categorized based on viscosity, and those predominantly containing heavy fuel oil are classified as heavy marine diesel oil.

Marine FuelMax. Sulfur Content
High sulfur fuel oil (HSFO)3.5%
Low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO)1.0%
Ultra low sulfur fuel oil (ULSFO)0.1%

High-Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO): Ships can use HSFO with scrubbers to reduce emissions, but retrofitting is costly.

Low-Sulfur Fuel Oil(LSFO): Desulfurized HFO with sulfur content below 1%, now largely replaced by ULSFO in ECAs.

Ultra-Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (ULSFO): Since 2015, ships in ECAs must use ULSFO, with a maximum of 0.1% sulfur, usually referring to marine gasoil.
