EN590 Diesel Fuel Standards
This standard defines the physical properties of diesel fuel, aligning with European emission regulations to promote environmental sustainability. In the UK, all Road Diesel (DERV) complies with EN590 and, due to its low sulfur content, is often referred to as Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD).

Since 2007, the term Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel has been used in the EU to describe diesel conforming to EN590. However, this terminology and standard can vary in different regions worldwide. Despite covering multiple fuel characteristics, water content remains a crucial aspect for fuel maintenance. To meet EN590 standards, diesel must contain no more than 200 mg of water per kg of fuel, representing just 0.02% water contamination. Due to the hygroscopic nature of modern biodiesel blends, regular testing and the use of water extraction processes, such as polishing systems or periodic tank cleaning, are necessary to adhere to this stringent requirement.
The table below outlines the EN590 standards, including the permissible blending of up to 7% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) biodiesel with conventional petrochemical diesel.
